The First 20 Hours: How to Learn Anything . . . Fast! Review | Rating 8/10

To be proficient or not to be, what makes the difference? According to Josh Kaufman in The First 20 Hours, it only takes twenty hours. My reasoning for picking up this book was Josh’s first book The Personal MBA along with his TED Talk. I trust Josh based off an analysis of his TED Talk, but this book just felt regurgitated. In an attempt to monetize his TED talk. I would recommend just watching his TED Talk; it will take less of your time and get the get the same point across.

I did enjoy every topic that he covered; typing, programming, yoga, go, the ukulele, and windsurfing. If you struggle with starting new things for whatever reason, you will probably rate this book higher than me.

Here are his top 10 rules for rapid learning:

  1. “Choose a lovable project.”
  2. “Jump in over your head.” Be confused about what you are learning to make sure that you are learning at a good pace, then focus on what confuses you.
  3. “Identify mental models and mental hooks.” Mind maps and mnemonics, check out these two books; The Memory Book and Moon Walking with Einstein.
  4. “Imagine the opposite of what you want.” Simulate the worst possible outcome and how can you mitigate it.
  5. “Talk to practitioners to set expectations.” Mentors are priceless.
  6. “Eliminate distractions in your environment.” Deep Work.
  7. “Use spaced repetition and reinforcement for memorization.”
  8. “Create scaffolds and checklists.”
  9. “Make and test predictions.”
  10. “Honor your biology.”

Crushing It Review | Rating 8/10

If you want to start a personal brand Crushing It by Gary Vaynerchuk is the Archimedes Lever that you need. First, it will be nearly impossible to be an overnight success. Some have taken years just a build a small following but remember all you need is one-thousand true fans. You must grind, socialize, and provide massive value. While respecting your audience. Do not think that your audience is dumb. If you sell people a $60 course for a few hundred dollars and start to plateau, do not wonder why. This will also lower the number of promoters that you have and your reputation as a reliable brand. People want other people and not hustlers.

Your one mission is to provide what you can’t find and to humanize it with your own humor. Make sure that your brand is not tied to or reliant on one platform, physics states the nothing can live forever. Make sure that you give everything a chance to expand your footprint. Then record yourself going through the grind. Your high energy and passion must show. Realize that you can turn your passions into a living and get after it.

Unfu*k Yourself Review | Rating 8/10

Stop fu*king your mindset up, Gary John will show you how in Unfu*k Yourself. Gary gives one seven affirmations to live by. If you do not know where to start improving this book is a great foundation. He provides personal examples of each affirmation making sure that you remember them. I have been starting my day by reading these affirmations ever since I listened to this book.

“I am willing.” I am not willing can also be used. From here the next logical move is to tie this to pain or pleasure. I am willing, to do x to achieve y. I am not willing to let x happen because of y.

“I am wired to win.” Believe is one of those traits that separates us from the rest of the animal kingdom.

“I got this.” Simulate the victory, and how to get there. The One Thing tells us to start with the goal and then work your way back to the present. Making sure that all of your ambitions are properly pre-meditated.

“I embrace the uncertainty.” We cannot control the universe. We can control our perception of it. So, make sure that your paradigms have enough slack for the universe.

“I am not my thoughts I am what I do.” Clear your conscious; then your actions are all that you have.

“I am relentless.” Bust a Tony Robbins, and brainwash yourself.

“I expect nothing and accept everything.” Nothing is everything, and everything is nothing both have infinite meanings, so live the moment. Engage all your senses and be ready to pounce.

Elon Musk: Tesla, SpaceX, and the Quest for a Fantastic Future Review | Rating 9/10

When the sh*t hits the fan, how many people can put all their chips down and go all in? Elon Musk can, and his biography which only covers a fraction of his life will show you why he is the demigod of Quora. I recall watching an interview where a person stated that “Elon was sent from another planet to show us, mortals, how to run a business.” As a child, he was smarter than his programming teacher and read the encyclopedia. One can assume that he started making mind maps and strong neural connections around that time.

Watching Elon realize the vast opportunity in the internet and then digitizing yellow pages was a treat. Everything from the PayPal Mafia to the inception of Space X and Tesla shows one what a zenith being is capable of. Most biographies do not have a cinematic climax, but when Elon was running out of money with both companies struggling I got a shot of adrenaline, and the pages started turning themselves. Elon is easily going to be one of the most significant people of this century, and I can’t wait to watch him accomplish his goals.
